Personal Coaching

Personal Coaching Has Broad Impact

The particular personal growth challenge that comes up in one arena of your life often applies to other arenas as well. For example, if you need to strengthen your boundary-setting skills, it may first become apparent at work. With coaching, you may learn to:

  • eliminate interruptions for part of every day at work so you can more effectively do the work that demands extended periods of concentration
  • leave on time so that you’re not white-knuckling it all the way to pick up your child at day care
  • let people know you don’t want to hear daily grousing about your manager

As you practice setting boundaries at work, you may be surprised to find that in your personal life you are starting to:

  • set clearer and more effective limits with your pre-schooler
  • let your in-laws know it’s not OK to just stop by un-announced
  • stop saying yes when you want to say no

Personal Growth is Non-Linear

It is the nature of personal development that a person’s “next lesson” frequently appears in multiple ways. At a time when my mentor coach was helping me become a lot more visible in order to grow my business, my voice teacher was saying to me, literally, “You have to take up more space when you sing!” The beauty of this is that moving forward in any aspect of your life supports your moving forward in others.

I Can Help You Cut to the Chase

I know that bottom line, you want practical, real-world results as soon as possible. My job is to help you identify and address your challenge in the most immediate and pragmatic way possible.

The essence of “what’s up” for you is different from what’s up with another person. That said, many people’s challenges fall into similar categories. See if any of these situations reminds you of yours.

  • Do You Have the Right Work:Home Ratio?
Many people have worked with me to figure out the right work-to-home ratio for that year, given the ages and needs of their children or other family responsibilities, and the nature of their work and ambition, and then implementing that ratio, which may require re-structuring or renegotiating at work or at home, anticipating and preparing for push-back, and so forth.
  • Are You Clear on Your Priorities and Streamlined Accordingly?
A real estate professional used me to help her streamline her business and get enough help that year so that she could spend more time with her mother, who was probably dying. She was absolutely clear about her priorities, in this case. Many other clients use personal coaching to get very clear, for themselves, what their true priorities are, right now, at this moment in their life, and then to structure their lives in alignment with those priorities.
  • How Well Are You Managing Your Inner Perfectionist?
I have helped many people bring their perfectionist tendencies into line with reality and stop being so hard on themselves. I encourage them to identify low-risk areas where a B+ job is adequate. For many effective people, learning to selectively and intentionally lower standards in appropriate places can create some powerful and sorely needed breathing room without bad consequences. For example, a single mom stopped making hand-made holiday gifts and started ordering gifts on line, and a manager started meeting with each of her reports for an hour every other week instead of every week.
  • Are You Hostage to Toxic Self-Talk or Toxic Emotions?
I have helped people stop beating up on themselves and adopt more constructive behaviors around procrastinating, being late, getting stressed, becoming drained and exhausted, communication skills, guilt, resentment, and many other challenging dynamics.
  • Do You Need a Reality Check?
Some people use me to get a reality check. For a lot of people my response is, “the situation at your work place IS as bad as you think,” or “yes, this person’s behavior is unacceptable.” And then we figure out what she wants to do about it, if anything. For other people, my response is “The situation at work is not inappropriate -- your expectations are unrealistic.” And then we work with that. Or, I will help you see that as a middle aged, overweight, non-athlete, your chances of becoming an NBA star player are about zero. I will be truthful with you, but not judgmental. I have great respect for my clients, and they feel it.

How Does Personal Coaching Work?

Listen to what my clients say. Here is a sample:

Thank you for your non-judgmental attitude! For staying with me at my level and being a broken record when necessary. For pointing out ‘windows’ when the ‘doors’ were locked!”

I am still using the ‘next step’ idea you gave me some months ago. It helps me a lot. So thank you for that and for starting me on a new journey of getting help when I need it . . . to change things when they need to get changed . . . and to feel more ok with the unique me.”

Sometimes when everyone around you (at work) is singing from the same hymnal it is hard to hear your own voice. Thank you for helping me hear my voice again and validating it!”
