Success Coaching

What Would YOUR Success Look Like?
How Would You Know When You’d Reached it?

What's really the issue for you? What’s keeping you from the success you desire in your personal and professional life? Here are some of the dynamics we can address in success coaching. You may be interested in working on just one or two of these, or they may all apply to you.

  • getting clear on what “success” means for you now
  • identifying the pressure and push-back against your going for it
  • drafting a game plan and getting started
  • anticipating and preparing for dynamics that could potentially de-rail you
  • clearing space/time for the new project
  • finding the right language/message for letting people know what you’re up to
  • strengthening boundaries to protect your ability to go forward
  • breaking down the overwhelming big goal into completely do-able next steps
  • taking consistent, intentional action
  • debriefing, trouble shooting, course correcting as needed

Sample Outcomes

What follows is a sample of outcomes my success coaching clients have created in our work together:

  • finishing the novel, dissertation, text book, or proposal
  • one business owner decided to go after the kinds of work she really wanted to do rather than the kinds of work she thought she had to do; she is financially successful and well-known in this new area and very happy doing the work
  • renovating the house and getting married
  • getting off the hamster wheel of thinking about becoming a coach and taking action: investigating, choosing, registering for, and starting a coach training program
  • starting to do some fun design projects in the house after being overwhelmed for the last 5 years after the birth of her triplets
  • a senior VP and mother of a 2-year-old worked with me to fine-tune her travel and work schedule, her agreements with her manager and reports, her arrangements with her nanny, and her shared childcare with her husband in order to keep the whole complex scenario running smoothly.
  • learning to acknowledge what’s been accomplished (by you or your team) instead of ONLY noticing what’s next

Case Studies

A few case studies you may find compelling:

  • An epidemiologist was on track to become chair of her department at a prestigious university, where she also did research. As her administrative responsibilities increased, she felt conflicted and confused. In the quiet, non-judgmental safety of the coaching conversation, she was able to separate her own true yearning from what other people wanted for her. She realized she wanted to focus exclusively on her research and that she didn’t actually want the prestigious administrative position she was capable of. She chose to follow her heart and move more fully into her own research. She was in and out of coaching in a single month.
  • After she closed her business two years ago, an entrepreneur bounced from one thing to another without much passion or result, until she hired me to help her find the right “next thing.” What we found was that she had not reached closure with her old business. She was unnecessarily living with a sense of failure about the old business that was greatly holding her back. Through our conversations and the exercises I designed for her, she was able to de-brief more fully from the old business, re-frame it as the rich and complex mixed experience that it actually was, and release her black and white thinking about it. Once she did that, she was able to find her next adventure. This all took place within a single month of success coaching.
  • A senior vice president of a financial services company longed to have more flexibility and time to spend with her adolescent children. She was tempted to start her own business, yet she had been with the company for a long time and had helped it grow and be successful. It was a long and difficult decision for her, but in her own time and in her own way, she decided to leave the organization and start her own consulting firm, based at home.

Your Success is Unique

The way you define success is unique to you. None of these case studies will capture YOUR journey — they can’t possibly. But you may sense enough familiar threads or dynamics to give you a sense of what could be available to you. To explore this more fully, I recommend that you set up an initial consultation with me and find out what I can offer you. I’m not the right coach for everyone, and if I’m not the right coach for you, we’ll both know it by the end of our phone meeting.

What Will Success Coaching Be Like?

Listen to what my clients say. Here is a sample:

I am firmly convinced that having a good coach (you) was an important factor in my making a bigger life change. I still struggle with balance issues, but I know I have the “big picture” much more aligned with my values. I no longer have the nagging feeling that I’m not living where I’d really like to be living. It’s so beautiful here.”

Thanks so much Sharon, you are a big part of any success that I feel. It helps so much to recognize what I want and what I bring, in a strong confident way (not defensive, urgent, or arrogant) and working with you is how I get there.”

It was so great to hear your perspective on my situation at work. It also felt great to get started working with you again. I feel like a great weight has been lifted off my shoulders because I'm finally starting to move forward to tackle some of these issues more directly.”

You saw my small steps and applauded them, genuinely, which made me see how ruthlessly I drive myself without ever a thank you.”
